Against the backdrop of the rising incidence of fibroid affliction among Nigeria’s womenfolk, PAAO has set in motion efforts to achieve the establishment of an annual fibroid treatment project known as PAAO Annual Fibroid Treatment (AFT) Project.
The AFT Project will operate by selecting 1,000 patients for proper medical attention under its auspices.
Fibroid are tumors that grow in the Uterus (womb). They are benign (i.e. non- cancerous) and are made up of muscle-fibers that press against vital reproductive organs as they grow, resulting in fertility decline.
Fibroids can be as small as a pea and can grow as large as a melon. It is estimated that 20-50% of women have or will have fibroid at some point in their lives. This condition is rare among women under the age of 20 but common among women in their 30s and 40s.
Fibroid swellings tend to shrink after menopause, having effectively tormented the reproductively active years of their victims.
The focus of the Annual Fibroid Treatment Project will be as follows:
Inspection of hospitals and other relevant health facilities.
Provision of free medical check-up for women at designated medical centers.
Provision of free treatment and medication to fibroid-afflicted women.
Selection of One Thousand (1000) women for the Annual Fibroid Treatment.
Launching of the free Fibroid Education Handbook in three major Nigerian languages.
The following activities will be activated to complement the professional treatment objective of The AFT Project:
Organization of a special fund-raising ceremony to increase the resource-capacity and general efficiency of the project.
The fund-raiser will be preceded by a special launching of the ceremony’s tickets and raffle draw.
Activation and sustenance of an intense Fibroid Treatment Campaign, involving special visits to opinion-leaders and key-interest-drivers across the country such as:
The President of the Federation
State Governors
Traditional Rulers
Corporate Organizations
Relevant UN Agencies and Individuals who find interest in our cause.
